Common Mistakes that Founders Make

blog post image

RSVP here.

Join us at our Studio for a rare panel event on founder mistakes and failures with two of the wisest, most accomplished, and highly respected VCs in the tech space as well as the founder of FailCon! We’ll talk about common mistakes that founders make when launching and growing their companies and, separately, dissect some of the most underestimated failures in tech innovation and entrepreneurship.

About The Speakers

Stewart Alsop, Partner at Alsop Louie Partners. Stewart spent the first 20 years of his professional career as a journalist and commentator. He started various businesses and conferences. In 1996, Stewart became a venture capitalist and led investments in companies such as TiVo, Portola Communication (sold to Netscape), Netcentives, Glu Mobile, and Xfire. From 1996-2003, he wrote Alsop on InfoTech for Fortune. In 2005, Stewart co-founded Alsop Louie Partners. He has over 25 years of experience with entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation and, more recently, has acted as a member of the board of directors of Sonos Inc, a leader in digital audio and the digital living room.

Mitchell Kertzman, Managing Director at Hummer Winblad Venture Partners. Mitchell has over 30 years of experience as a CEO of public and private software companies. Most recently, Mitchell was Chairman and CEO of Liberate Technologies, a provider of platform software for the delivery of digital services by cable television companies. Before joining Liberate, he was chairman of the board and CEO of Sybase, Inc. Mitchell was founder and CEO of Powersoft, which merged with Sybase in February 1995. A former programmer, Mitchell founded Powersoft in 1974 as Computer Solutions. He renamed the company and became a member of the Hummer Winblad family in 1991 when Hummer Winblad invested in the company, which became the leading provider of client-server development tools with its flagship product, PowerBuilder. The merger with Sybase in 1995 was, at the time, the most valuable in the history of the software industry. He served on the New York State Commission on Industrial Competitiveness and chaired its task force on industrial policy. Mitchell was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. He currently sits on the Boards of Five9, Flite, HubPages, NuoDB, Palamida and 6connect.

Cass Phillips, Founder & Executive Producer of FailCon. Cass has been working in the startup event space for over 6 years, and has worked with organizations including SF Beta, Girls In Tech, the SF MusicTech Summit, Inside Mobile, and more!  In 2009, she founded FailCon while struggling at her own startup, as a community where founders could feel safe to discuss their challenges and failure.  FailCon has since become a global conference, with events produced in over 20 cities around the world.  Recently, she’s also taken a hand at game design, and joined mobile game company Pocket Gems as a designer in 2012.  You can follow her startup adventures @webwallflower.

This event will be moderated by Leila Banijamali, entrepreneur and startup lawyer at Bedrock.
